Menses

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Menses (also known as a menstrual period) is a regular natural change that occurs in the female reproductive system (specifically the uterus and ovaries) that makes pregnancy possible. The menstrual cycle, which is measured from the first day of one period to the first day of the next, isn't the same for every woman. Menstrual flow might occur every 21 to 35 days and last two to seven days.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The menstrual cycle is the regular natural change that occurs in the female reproductive system (specifically the uterus and ovaries) that makes pregnancy possible. The cycle is required for the production of ovocytes, and for the preparation of the uterus for pregnancy. The menstrual cycle occurs due to the rise and fall of hormones. This cycle results in the thickening of the lining of the uterus, and the growth of an egg, (which is required for pregnancy). The egg is released from an ovary around day fourteen in the cycle; the thickened lining of the uterus provides nutrients to an embryo after implantation. If pregnancy does not occur, the lining is released in what is known as menstruation.

Phases[edit | edit source]

The menstrual cycle is divided into several phases, and menstrual flow is considered the first phase of each menstrual cycle. Other phases include the follicular phase (before ovulation), ovulation, and the luteal phase (after ovulation).

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Common menstrual problems include heavy or painful periods and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). PMS symptoms include bloating, irritability, backaches, headaches, breast soreness, acne, etc. They usually go away after menstruation begins.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment might include lifestyle changes, pain relievers, hormone therapy, and surgery. The choice of treatment depends on your age, the severity of your symptoms, whether you're planning to become pregnant, and your general health.
