Montefalco DOC

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Montefalco DOC is a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) wine designation in the Umbria region of central Italy. The region is known for producing high-quality red wines and white wines, with a focus on native grape varieties such as Sagrantino and Grechetto.

History[edit | edit source]

The Montefalco DOC was established in 1979, with the aim of protecting and promoting the unique wines of the Montefalco region. The area has a long history of wine production, with evidence of viticulture dating back to the Roman Empire. The region's wines gained recognition in the 13th century, when they were praised by Pope Boniface VIII.

Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]

The Montefalco DOC is located in the province of Perugia, in the heart of the Umbria region. The area is characterized by its hilly terrain and Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The soil in the region is predominantly clay and limestone, which contributes to the distinctive character of the wines.

Grape Varieties and Wine Styles[edit | edit source]

The Montefalco DOC permits the production of both red and white wines. The primary grape variety for red wines is Sagrantino, which is known for its high tannin levels and complex flavors. Other permitted red grape varieties include Sangiovese and Merlot.

White wines from the Montefalco DOC are typically made from the Grechetto grape, which produces wines with crisp acidity and floral aromas. Other permitted white grape varieties include Trebbiano and Verdicchio.

Wine Production and Aging[edit | edit source]

Wine production in the Montefalco DOC follows traditional methods, with a focus on quality and expression of terroir. Red wines must be aged for a minimum of 18 months, with at least 6 months in oak barrels. White wines must be aged for a minimum of 6 months.
