Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), is a complex, chronic medical condition characterized by severe fatigue and other symptoms. These symptoms are worsened by physical or mental activity, but do not improve with rest.

Diagnosis of ME/CFS can be difficult, as there is no specific test for the condition. Instead, doctors must rule out other conditions that can cause similar symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has criteria for diagnosing ME/CFS, which includes having four or more of the following symptoms for six months or more:

  • Post-exertional malaise
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Significant impairment of short-term memory or concentration
  • Muscle pain
  • Pain in the joints without swelling or redness
  • Headaches of a new type, pattern, or severity
  • Frequent or recurring sore throat
  • Tender lymph nodes in the neck or armpit
