Neal Joseph Smatresk (born July 9, 1951) is an American academic administrator and the current president of the University of North Texas (UNT). He has held this position since February 3, 2014.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Neal Smatresk was born in New York City, New York. He earned a B.A. in Biology from Gettysburg College in 1973. He then went on to receive a M.A. in Zoology from the University at Buffalo in 1978, followed by a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980.
Career[edit | edit source]
Smatresk began his academic career as a faculty member at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he served as a professor of Biology and later as the chair of the Department of Biology. He then moved to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he served as the provost and executive vice president. In 2009, he was appointed as the president of UNLV, a position he held until 2014.
On February 3, 2014, Smatresk became the president of the University of North Texas. During his tenure, he has focused on increasing student enrollment, enhancing research initiatives, and improving the university's infrastructure.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Neal Smatresk is married to his wife, Debbie, and they have two children. He is known for his passion for education and his commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive academic environment.
