Nilratan Sircar

Nilratan Sircar (1 October 1861 – 18 May 1943) was an eminent Indian physician, educationist, philanthropist, and freedom fighter. Born in the town of Midnapore, in the West Bengal state of India, Sircar played a pivotal role in the development of medical education in India. He is best known for his contributions to the establishment of the Calcutta Medical College, where he also served as a professor of medicine.

Nilratan Sircar was born into a Brahmin family. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in the field of medicine. After completing his early education in his hometown, he moved to Calcutta (now Kolkata) for higher studies. He graduated in medicine from the Calcutta Medical College, where he later became a distinguished faculty member.

Sircar's career was marked by his dedication to improving medical education and healthcare in India. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Carmichael Medical College, which was later renamed R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. In addition to his medical career, Sircar was actively involved in the Indian freedom movement. He was a close associate of prominent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, advocating for India's independence through non-violent means.
