Oguntola Sapara (1861–1935) was a pioneering Nigerian physician and public health advocate. He is renowned for his contributions to the development of modern medical practices in Nigeria and his efforts to combat infectious diseases.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Oguntola Sapara was born in 1861 in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to Yoruba parents. He later moved to Lagos, where he pursued his early education. Sapara went on to study medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he graduated with a medical degree in 1884.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Upon returning to Nigeria, Sapara became one of the first indigenous doctors to practice Western medicine in the country. He worked at the Lagos General Hospital and later established his private practice. Sapara was deeply committed to improving public health and was instrumental in the fight against smallpox and other infectious diseases in Nigeria.

Sapara was a strong advocate for public health measures and sanitation. He played a key role in the establishment of the Lagos Sanitary Board, which was responsible for implementing public health policies and improving sanitary conditions in Lagos. His efforts significantly reduced the incidence of infectious diseases in the region.
