Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center

Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center is a hospital located in Lafayette, Louisiana in the United States. It was established in 1949 by the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady, a Roman Catholic religious order based in Calais, France. The hospital is a subsidiary of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, the largest locally owned, not-for-profit health system in Louisiana.

History

Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital was originally established in 1949 on St. Landry Street, near the University of Louisiana-Lafayette campus. Monsignor A. F. Isenberg, a priest from the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette, played a key role in its creation. Isenberg was treated at another Franciscan hospital, Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge, after being injured in an automobile accident in 1945. He recognized the need for a hospital in Lafayette and convinced the Franciscans to establish one. The hospital opened with 50 beds and underwent expansions in 1958 and 1972, increasing its capacity to 255 beds.

In the mid-2000s, the hospital leadership decided to relocate to a new facility that would incorporate the latest medical technology and techniques. The new Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center was built from 2009 to 2011 and officially opened in July 2011 on Ambassador Caffery Parkway. It is described as the largest construction project in the city's history.
