Ovo-lacto vegetarianism

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Ovo-lacto vegetarianism is a type of vegetarianism that includes the consumption of eggs and dairy products, but excludes the consumption of meat. This diet is popular among vegetarians who still want to obtain certain nutrients, such as protein and calcium, from animal sources.

History[edit | edit source]

The term "ovo-lacto vegetarianism" was first used in the 19th century, during a time when vegetarianism was becoming more popular in Western societies. The diet was seen as a compromise between a strict vegetarian diet and a diet that included meat.

Diet[edit | edit source]

An ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, eggs, and dairy products. It excludes meat, fish, and poultry. Some ovo-lacto vegetarians may also exclude certain types of dairy products, such as cheese made with animal rennet.

Health benefits[edit | edit source]

There are several health benefits associated with an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet. These include a lower risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer. The diet is also associated with a lower body mass index (BMI) and lower cholesterol levels.

Criticisms[edit | edit source]

Despite its health benefits, ovo-lacto vegetarianism has been criticized for its potential impact on animal welfare. Some critics argue that the production of eggs and dairy products still involves the exploitation of animals.
