A detailed article about the chemical compound Pentan-3-ol

Pentan-3-ol, also known as diethyl carbinol, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₅H₁₂O. It is one of the isomers of pentanol, a type of alcohol with five carbon atoms. Pentan-3-ol is a secondary alcohol, meaning the hydroxyl group (-OH) is attached to a carbon atom that is connected to two other carbon atoms.

Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]

Pentan-3-ol has a linear structure with the hydroxyl group located on the third carbon of the pentane chain. This positioning classifies it as a secondary alcohol. The molecular structure can be represented as:

 CH₃-CH₂-CHOH-CH₂-CH₃

The presence of the hydroxyl group makes pentan-3-ol polar, although it is less polar than shorter chain alcohols like ethanol or propanol. It has a boiling point of approximately 115°C and a melting point of -52°C. Pentan-3-ol is slightly soluble in water due to its polar nature but is more soluble in organic solvents.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

Pentan-3-ol can be synthesized through several methods:

1. Hydration of Alkenes: One common method is the acid-catalyzed hydration of pentene. 2. Reduction of Ketones: Another method involves the reduction of pentan-3-one using reducing agents such as sodium borohydride or lithium aluminium hydride.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Pentan-3-ol is used in various applications, including:

- As a solvent in the chemical industry due to its ability to dissolve both polar and non-polar substances. - In the synthesis of other chemical compounds, where it acts as an intermediate. - Occasionally in the production of perfumes and flavorings, although its use is limited compared to other alcohols.

Safety and Handling[edit | edit source]

Pentan-3-ol should be handled with care. It is flammable and can cause irritation to the skin and eyes. Proper protective equipment, such as gloves and goggles, should be used when handling this chemical. In case of contact with skin or eyes, the affected area should be rinsed thoroughly with water.
