Perry Gladstone Christie (born 21 August 1943) is a Bahamian politician who served as the Prime Minister of the Bahamas from 2002 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2017. He is a member of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) and has represented the Centreville constituency in the House of Assembly of the Bahamas since 1977.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Christie was born in Nassau, Bahamas. He attended the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, where he studied law. After completing his education, he returned to the Bahamas to practice law.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Christie began his political career as a member of the Progressive Liberal Party. He was first elected to the House of Assembly of the Bahamas in 1977, representing the Centreville constituency. He served in various ministerial positions, including Minister of Health and National Insurance, and Minister of Tourism.

Prime Minister (2002–2007)[edit | edit source]

In 2002, Christie led the PLP to victory in the general elections, becoming the third Prime Minister of the Bahamas. During his first term, he focused on economic development, education, and healthcare. However, his administration faced criticism for issues related to governance and transparency.

Leader of the Opposition (2007–2012)[edit | edit source]

After losing the 2007 general elections to the Free National Movement (FNM) led by Hubert Ingraham, Christie served as the Leader of the Opposition until 2012. During this period, he worked to rebuild the PLP and prepare for the next elections.

Prime Minister (2012–2017)[edit | edit source]

Christie returned to power in 2012 after the PLP won the general elections. His second term was marked by efforts to improve the economy, address crime, and implement social programs. Despite these efforts, his administration faced challenges, including allegations of corruption and economic difficulties.

Post-Prime Ministerial career[edit | edit source]

After the PLP's defeat in the 2017 general elections, Christie stepped down as party leader and was succeeded by Philip Davis. He continues to be an influential figure in Bahamian politics.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Christie is married to Bernadette Christie, and they have three children. He is known for his interest in sports, particularly track and field.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Christie's tenure as Prime Minister is noted for his contributions to the development of the Bahamas, particularly in the areas of healthcare, education, and tourism. However, his legacy is also marked by controversies and criticisms related to governance and economic management.
