Hubert Minnis
Hubert Alexander Minnis (born April 16, 1954) is a Bahamian politician who served as the Prime Minister of the Bahamas from May 11, 2017, to September 16, 2021. He is a member of the Free National Movement (FNM) and has represented the Killarney constituency in the House of Assembly of the Bahamas since 2007.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Hubert Minnis was born in Nassau, Bahamas. He attended the University of the West Indies where he earned a degree in medicine. He furthered his studies in obstetrics and gynecology in the United Kingdom and Canada.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Before entering politics, Minnis had a successful career as a physician. He was a consultant and head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau. He also founded the Bahamas' first private IVF center.

Early Political Involvement[edit | edit source]
Minnis entered politics in 2007 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Killarney constituency. He was appointed Minister of Health under the administration of Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham.
Leadership of the Free National Movement[edit | edit source]
In 2012, following the FNM's defeat in the general election, Minnis was elected leader of the party. He served as the Leader of the Opposition until the FNM's victory in the 2017 general election.
Prime Minister of the Bahamas[edit | edit source]
Minnis was sworn in as the fourth Prime Minister of the Bahamas on May 11, 2017. During his tenure, he focused on economic reform, healthcare improvements, and disaster management, particularly in response to Hurricane Dorian in 2019. His government also dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic.
2021 General Election[edit | edit source]
In the 2021 general election, the FNM was defeated by the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), and Minnis was succeeded by Philip Davis as Prime Minister. Minnis continues to serve as the Member of Parliament for Killarney.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Minnis is married to Patricia Beneby, and they have three children. He is known for his commitment to public service and his contributions to the medical field in the Bahamas.
