- Prokaryotic picoplankton: This group includes cyanobacteria such as Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus, which are among the most abundant photosynthetic organisms in the ocean. These cyanobacteria are capable of photosynthesis, contributing significantly to primary production in marine ecosystems.
- Eukaryotic picoplankton: This group consists of small algae and protists, including picoeukaryotes like Micromonas and Ostreococcus. These organisms also contribute to primary production and serve as a food source for larger planktonic organisms.

Picoplankton are integral to the oceanic carbon cycle. Through photosynthesis, they fix carbon dioxide into organic matter, forming the base of the marine food web. This organic matter is then transferred to higher trophic levels, supporting a diverse array of marine life.
In addition to their role in primary production, picoplankton are involved in the microbial loop, a process that recycles nutrients within the ocean. Heterotrophic picoplankton, such as bacterioplankton, decompose organic matter, releasing nutrients that are then available for uptake by other organisms.
