Pimethixene

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Pimethixene is a histamine antagonist that is classified under the antihistamine category of drugs. It is primarily used in the treatment of allergies, hay fever, rhinitis, urticaria, and other allergic reactions.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "Pimethixene" is derived from its chemical name, which is 2-(9,10-Dimethoxy-5-methyl-4-[[2-methyl-3-(methylamino)propyl]amino]-6H-thieno[3,2-f][1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a][1,4]diazepin-6-yl)-N,N-dimethylethanamine.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Pimethixene acts by blocking the action of histamine at the H1 receptor, thereby preventing the symptoms of allergies. It is a potent and selective antagonist of the H1 receptor, with a high affinity for this receptor. This makes it effective in relieving the symptoms of allergies.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Like other antihistamines, Pimethixene can cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation. In rare cases, it can cause serious side effects such as difficulty urinating, heart palpitations, and confusion.
