Prekmurska gibanica

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Prekmurska gibanica is a traditional Slovenian pastry dish that originates from the Prekmurje region. It is a layered cake with a unique combination of various fillings, including poppy seeds, cottage cheese, walnuts, and apples. The dish is recognized as a significant cultural heritage of Slovenia and is protected at the national level.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Prekmurska gibanica can be traced back to the 18th century in the Prekmurje region, which was then part of the Habsburg Monarchy. It was traditionally prepared for special occasions and celebrations, such as weddings and religious holidays. Today, it is a popular dessert in Slovenia and is also enjoyed in parts of Hungary and Austria.

Preparation[edit | edit source]

The preparation of Prekmurska gibanica involves several steps. The dough is rolled out and layered with the four fillings: poppy seeds, cottage cheese, walnuts, and apples. Each layer is sprinkled with sugar, cinnamon, and raisins. The process is repeated until all the dough and fillings are used. The cake is then baked until golden brown.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Prekmurska gibanica is considered a symbol of Slovenian culinary heritage. In 2010, it was declared a protected dish by the Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Food. This means that the name "Prekmurska gibanica" can only be used for cakes that are made according to the traditional recipe in the Prekmurje region.
