A Proximal Humerus Fracture is a type of bone fracture that occurs in the humerus (upper arm bone) near the shoulder. This type of fracture is common in older adults, particularly those with osteoporosis, and can result from a fall onto an outstretched arm or direct trauma to the shoulder.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Proximal humerus fractures are often caused by a fall onto an outstretched arm, direct trauma to the shoulder, or a sudden, forceful pull. In older adults, these fractures can occur from a simple fall due to weakened bone from osteoporosis.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of a proximal humerus fracture can include severe pain, swelling, and bruising in the upper arm or shoulder area. The person may also have difficulty moving the arm and shoulder.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of a proximal humerus fracture is typically made through a physical examination and imaging tests, such as an X-ray. In some cases, a CT scan or MRI may be used to provide more detailed images of the fracture.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for a proximal humerus fracture depends on the severity and type of fracture. Non-displaced fractures, where the bone pieces remain aligned, can often be treated with a sling and physical therapy. Displaced fractures, where the bone pieces have moved out of alignment, may require surgery.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

With appropriate treatment, most people with a proximal humerus fracture can regain full function of their arm and shoulder. However, recovery can take several months and may require physical therapy.
