Puducherry (formerly known as Pondicherry) is a Union territory in India. It was formed out of four enclaves of former French India, namely Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam. The territory is named after the largest district, Puducherry.

Puducherry has a rich history influenced by various colonial powers. The region was under the control of the French East India Company from the 17th century until 1954, when it was officially transferred to the Republic of India. The French influence is still evident in the architecture, culture, and cuisine of the region.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Puducherry is located on the southeastern coast of India. It consists of four small unconnected districts: Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam. The total area of the union territory is 492 square kilometers.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2011 Census of India, Puducherry had a population of 1,394,467. The official languages are Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and French. The literacy rate is relatively high compared to the national average.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Puducherry is driven by agriculture, fishing, and tourism. The region is known for its Auroville community and Sri Aurobindo Ashram, which attract visitors from around the world. The industrial sector also contributes significantly to the economy, with several small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the region.

Puducherry has a unique cultural heritage that reflects its colonial past. The region celebrates various festivals such as Pongal, Diwali, and Bastille Day. The cuisine is a blend of Tamil, French, and Creole influences, featuring dishes like Bouillabaisse, Crepes, and Dosa.

Puducherry is governed by a Lieutenant Governor appointed by the President of India. The union territory has a Legislative Assembly with elected representatives. The current Lieutenant Governor is Tamilisai Soundararajan.

Puducherry has several educational institutions, including Pondicherry University, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), and various schools and colleges offering courses in different fields of study.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

Tourism is a major industry in Puducherry. Popular tourist attractions include the Promenade Beach, Auroville, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and the French War Memorial. The region's colonial architecture, serene beaches, and spiritual centers make it a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists.
