Rajasthan

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Rajasthan is a state in the northern region of India. It is the largest Indian state by area and the seventh largest by population. Rajasthan is located on the northwestern side of India, where it comprises most of the wide and inhospitable Thar Desert (also known as the "Rajasthan Desert" and "Great Indian Desert") and shares a border with the Pakistani provinces of Punjab to the northwest and Sindh to the west, along the Sutlej-Indus river valley.

History[edit | edit source]

Rajasthan's history dates back to the pre-historic times. Around 3,000 BC, it had a culture akin to the Indus Valley Civilisation. The first Aryan settlement was at Dundhmer in modern day Dundhar. The influence of the Aryans and later the Scythians can be seen in the culture and language of the Rajasthanis.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Rajasthan is geographically divided into two main parts: The Thar Desert and the land east of the Aravalli Range. The state has an area of 342,239 square kilometres or 10.4% of India's total area. It is larger than England and Wales combined.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Rajasthan's economy is primarily agricultural and pastoral. Wheat and barley are cultivated over large areas, as are pulses, sugarcane, and oilseeds. Rajasthan is among the largest producers of edible oils in India and the second largest producer of oilseeds. Rajasthan is also the biggest wool-producing state in India.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Rajasthan is known for its traditional, colorful art. The block prints, tie and dye prints, Bagaru prints, Sanganer prints, and Zari embroidery are major export products from Rajasthan. Folk music and dance are important parts of Rajasthani culture.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

Rajasthan is a popular tourist destination in India. The palaces of Jaipur, lakes of Udaipur, and desert forts of Jodhpur, Bikaner and Jaisalmer are among the most preferred destinations of many tourists.
