Romandy

Romandy is the French-speaking part of western Switzerland. It includes the cantons of Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Jura, parts of the canton of Bern, Valais, and Fribourg. The term 'Romandy' has been in use since the early 20th century. It is derived from the word 'Romand', which is an old French term for the Walloon speakers of the Canton of Bern.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Romandy covers about 10,700 square kilometers and is bordered by Germany, France, and Italy. The region is predominantly mountainous, with the Alps covering about 60% of the total land area. The highest point in Romandy is the Dufourspitze in Valais, which stands at 4,634 meters above sea level.

Language[edit | edit source]

The official language of Romandy is French. The region is home to several dialects of Franco-Provençal, a Romance language that is distinct from but closely related to French. The use of these dialects has declined significantly in the 20th and 21st centuries, with French now being the dominant language in the region.
