Royal Hospital for Sick Children
Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC), also known as Sick Kids, is a specialist pediatric hospital located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It provides comprehensive health care services for children and young people, including emergency care, surgery, and outpatient services.
History[edit | edit source]
The Royal Hospital for Sick Children was established in 1860, making it one of the oldest pediatric hospitals in the United Kingdom. The hospital was initially located in Lauriston Lane, Edinburgh, before moving to its current location in Sciennes in 1895. The hospital has a rich history of providing high-quality care to children and has been instrumental in many significant advancements in pediatric medicine.
Services[edit | edit source]
The Royal Hospital for Sick Children offers a wide range of services, including general pediatrics, neonatology, pediatric surgery, and pediatric intensive care. The hospital also has specialist departments for cardiology, neurology, oncology, and orthopedics, among others.
In addition to its clinical services, the hospital also plays a key role in medical research and medical education, with strong links to the University of Edinburgh and other educational institutions.
Facilities[edit | edit source]
The hospital's facilities are designed to provide a comfortable and supportive environment for children and their families. These include play areas, family rooms, and accommodation for parents. The hospital also has a school for patients who are in the hospital for long periods.
Future[edit | edit source]
In 2021, it was announced that the Royal Hospital for Sick Children would be relocated to a new purpose-built facility at the Edinburgh BioQuarter, a leading health and science campus. The new hospital, to be known as the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, will continue the RHSC's legacy of providing exceptional care for children and young people.
