From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

St. Charles Health System, Inc. (SCHS) is a non-profit healthcare company and four-hospital network located in Central Oregon. The system operates St. Charles medical centers in Bend, Redmond, Madras, and Prineville. With over 3,000 employees, SCHS is the largest employer in the region.

History[edit | edit source]

The first St. Charles Hospital was established in 1922 in downtown Bend, Oregon. It was named after Bishop Charles Joseph O'Reilly, the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Baker. In 1951, a new facility was built on the same site. In 1972, the hospital's assets were transferred to a new non-profit corporation called St. Charles Memorial Hospital Inc. The current St. Charles Medical Center was dedicated on October 12, 1975. The old St. Charles Memorial Hospital building was demolished in March 1977.

In 2001, Central Oregon District Hospital and St. Charles Medical Center merged to form Cascade Healthcare Services, later renamed Cascade Healthcare Community, Inc. The hospital was then renamed Central Oregon Community Hospital. In 2003, the hospital's name was changed to St. Charles Medical Center Redmond.

On February 15, 2010, the Catholic Diocese of Baker announced its intention to dissolve its sponsorship of St. Charles Health System, making it a non-religious organization.
