Swallow refers to the process by which food is moved from the mouth through the pharynx and into the esophagus, initiating its journey to the stomach for digestion. This action is a crucial part of the human digestive system, involving a complex coordination of neurological and muscular systems. Swallowing is divided into three phases: the oral phase, the pharyngeal phase, and the esophageal phase, each playing a vital role in the safe and efficient movement of food from the mouth to the stomach.

Oral Phase[edit | edit source]

The oral phase, also known as the preparatory phase, involves the chewing and moistening of food with saliva to form a cohesive bolus. The tongue plays a key role in this phase, manipulating the food in the mouth and pushing the bolus towards the back of the mouth to initiate the next phase of swallowing.

Pharyngeal Phase[edit | edit source]

The pharyngeal phase is triggered when the bolus reaches the back of the mouth, stimulating sensory receptors and initiating a reflex that propels the bolus into the pharynx. During this phase, the larynx elevates, and the epiglottis folds over the trachea to prevent food from entering the respiratory system. This phase is involuntary and is controlled by the brainstem.

Esophageal Phase[edit | edit source]

The esophageal phase begins once the bolus enters the esophagus, a muscular tube that connects the pharynx to the stomach. Through a series of coordinated muscular contractions known as peristalsis, the bolus is pushed down the esophagus and into the stomach. This phase is also involuntary and is regulated by the autonomic nervous system.

Disorders of Swallowing[edit | edit source]

Disorders of swallowing, known as dysphagia, can occur at any stage of the swallowing process. Dysphagia can result from neurological disorders, structural abnormalities, muscular diseases, or infections. Symptoms may include difficulty swallowing, pain while swallowing, coughing or choking during meals, and recurrent pneumonia. Diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia typically involve a multidisciplinary approach, including speech and language therapy, dietary modifications, and sometimes surgical interventions.
