Theranostics
Theranostics refers to a combination of diagnostics and therapeutics. It is a term coined to define an innovative field in medicine that combines specific targeted therapy based on specific targeted diagnostic tests. With this method, patients undergo diagnostic tests before beginning therapy to determine which treatment options will work best for them.
History[edit | edit source]
The term "theranostics" was first used in the literature by John Funkhouser in 2002, in a publication discussing personalized medicine. The concept, however, has been in practice for several decades, particularly in the field of nuclear medicine.
Concept[edit | edit source]
The concept of theranostics revolves around the stratification of patients into different groups - each group being treated by a therapy that is most effective. The patient's genetic makeup or the genetic profile of the tumor can be used to decide the type of therapy. The concept can be applied to various types of diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders.
Application[edit | edit source]
Theranostics has a wide range of applications in disease management. It can be used in the detection and cure of various types of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders. It can also be used in the management of infectious diseases and in pharmacogenomics.
Advantages[edit | edit source]
Theranostics offers a number of advantages over traditional diagnostic and therapeutic methods. It allows for targeted therapy, reducing the risk of harmful side effects and improving the efficacy of treatment. It also allows for real-time monitoring of treatment response.
Limitations[edit | edit source]
Despite its advantages, theranostics also has some limitations. The main limitation is the high cost of theranostic tests and therapies, which may not be affordable for all patients. Additionally, there are regulatory and logistical challenges associated with the development and implementation of theranostic tests and therapies.
Future[edit | edit source]
The future of theranostics looks promising, with ongoing research focusing on the development of new theranostic agents and techniques. The field is expected to continue to grow and evolve, with the potential to revolutionize the way diseases are diagnosed and treated.
