Transient lingual papillitis (TLP), also known as lie bumps, is a common inflammatory condition that affects the taste buds on the tongue's surface. The condition is characterized by small, red or white bumps that appear on the tongue and cause discomfort or mild pain.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of TLP is unknown, but several factors are believed to contribute to its development. These include stress, hormonal fluctuations, certain foods, and minor injuries to the tongue.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of TLP is the sudden appearance of small, painful or sensitive bumps on the tongue. These bumps may be red or white and are typically located on the tip or sides of the tongue. Other symptoms may include a burning sensation, increased sensitivity to certain foods, and mild swelling.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

TLP is typically diagnosed based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination of the mouth and tongue. In some cases, a biopsy may be performed to rule out other conditions.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

There is no specific treatment for TLP as it usually resolves on its own within a few days. However, over-the-counter pain relievers and mouth rinses can help alleviate symptoms. Avoiding spicy or acidic foods can also reduce discomfort.
