Tropisetron

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Tropisetron is a serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist used mainly as an antiemetic to treat nausea and vomiting following chemotherapy, although it has been used experimentally as an analgesic in cases of fibromyalgia.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Tropisetron acts as both a selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist and α7-nicotinic receptor agonist. Tropisetron is a well-tolerated drug with few side effects. Headache, constipation, and dizziness are the most commonly reported side effects. These side effects are generally mild and transient.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

Tropisetron is a carbazole derivative with antiemetic activity. As a competitive antagonist at the 5-HT3 receptor, tropisetron blocks the action of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that may cause nausea and vomiting.

Clinical use[edit | edit source]

Tropisetron is used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or surgery. It is also used experimentally in the treatment of fibromyalgia.
