The University of Paris-Est Créteil Val de Marne (UPEC) is a French public university, located in Créteil, Île-de-France, France. It is one of the eight universities of the Paris region and a member of the Université Paris-Est community.

History[edit | edit source]

UPEC was founded in 1970 as part of the restructuring of French higher education. It was originally known as the University of Paris XII. In 2007, it adopted its current name to reflect its location in the eastern suburbs of Paris and its membership in the Université Paris-Est community.

Campus[edit | edit source]

The main campus of UPEC is located in Créteil, a suburb of Paris. It also has several other campuses in the Paris region, including in Vitry-sur-Seine, Saint-Denis, and Fontainebleau.

Academics[edit | edit source]

UPEC offers a wide range of academic programs in various fields, including humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, law, economics, and medicine. It is particularly known for its strong programs in law, economics, and medicine.

UPEC is a major research university, with numerous research centers and laboratories. Its research activities are organized into five main areas: health and society, cities and environment, global change and sustainability, digital society, and creativity and heritage.

Notable alumni[edit | edit source]

UPEC has produced many notable alumni, including Jean-Pierre Jouyet, a former French Minister of European Affairs, and Laurence Parisot, a former president of the French employers' union MEDEF.
