UTC-5
UTC-5 is a time zone that subtracts 5 hours from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). It is used in several countries in the Western Hemisphere, including parts of Canada, the United States, and a few countries in South America.
Overview[edit | edit source]
UTC-5 is the time zone for the Eastern Standard Time (EST) in the United States and Canada. This time zone is reckoned 75 degrees west of the Greenwich Meridian. The clock time in this zone is based on the mean solar time of the 75th meridian west of the Greenwich Observatory.
Daylight Saving Time[edit | edit source]
In the United States and Canada, this time zone is generally called Eastern Time (ET). During Daylight Saving Time (DST), it is shifted forward by one hour to UTC-4, which is Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
Countries and Regions Using UTC-5[edit | edit source]
Several countries and regions use UTC-5 as their standard time. These include:
- Parts of Canada, including most of Ontario, Quebec, and Nunavut (except the far west).
- The eastern part of the United States, including cities like New York City, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.
- Some countries in South America like Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador.
- The Caribbean nations of Cuba, Haiti, and the Bahamas.
