The Université Catholique De Louvain was originally founded in 1425 by Pope Martin V. It was the first university to be established in the Low Countries, and it quickly gained a reputation for excellence in theology, law, and medicine.
In 1797, the university was suppressed by the French Revolutionary government, but it was reestablished in 1834. In 1968, the university split into two separate entities: the French-speaking Université Catholique De Louvain, and the Dutch-speaking Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
