Von Ebner's glands, also known as gustatory glands, are minor salivary glands located in the oral cavity. These glands are named after the Austrian histologist Victor von Ebner.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
Von Ebner's glands are found in the circumvallate papillae and foliate papillae of the tongue. They are serous glands, meaning they secrete a watery, enzyme-rich fluid. The ducts of these glands open into the troughs surrounding the circumvallate and foliate papillae.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of Von Ebner's glands is to secrete a serous fluid that helps in the initial stages of digestion by beginning the breakdown of lipids and starch. This fluid also helps to cleanse the taste buds, allowing them to respond rapidly to changing stimuli. The secretion from these glands contains the enzyme lingual lipase, which plays a role in the digestion of dietary fats.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Dysfunction or blockage of Von Ebner's glands can lead to issues with taste and digestion. Inflammation or infection of these glands can result in pain and swelling, a condition known as sialadenitis.
