Wade Regehr
Wade Regehr is a prominent neuroscientist known for his significant contributions to the field of neurophysiology. He is a professor at Harvard Medical School in the Department of Neurobiology.
Education and Career[edit | edit source]
Wade Regehr received his undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley. He then pursued a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Washington, where he conducted research on synaptic transmission. Following his doctoral studies, Regehr completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University.
Regehr joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School in 1995, where he has since been a leading figure in the study of synaptic function and plasticity. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of synaptic transmission and the role of synapses in neural circuits.
Research Contributions[edit | edit source]
Wade Regehr's research has significantly advanced the understanding of synaptic function. His work has elucidated the mechanisms of short-term synaptic plasticity, including the roles of calcium dynamics and neurotransmitter release. Regehr's lab has developed innovative techniques for measuring synaptic activity, including the use of fluorescent indicators to monitor calcium levels in presynaptic terminals.
One of his notable contributions is the study of presynaptic inhibition and its impact on synaptic strength and plasticity. Regehr's research has also explored the interplay between synaptic activity and neuromodulation, providing insights into how synapses adapt to different physiological conditions.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Throughout his career, Wade Regehr has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to neuroscience. These include the Society for Neuroscience Young Investigator Award and the McKnight Scholar Award. He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Publications[edit | edit source]
Regehr has authored and co-authored numerous influential papers in high-impact scientific journals. His publications cover a wide range of topics related to synaptic function, including the mechanisms of neurotransmitter release, synaptic plasticity, and the development of new experimental techniques.
Teaching and Mentorship[edit | edit source]
In addition to his research, Wade Regehr is dedicated to teaching and mentoring the next generation of neuroscientists. He teaches courses in neurobiology at Harvard Medical School and has supervised many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who have gone on to successful careers in neuroscience.
