Yoctomole
Yoctomole is a unit of measurement in the International System of Units (SI) denoting 10^-24 of a mole (mol). It is the smallest recognized SI unit for the amount of substance. The prefix "yocto" is derived from the Greek word "οκτώ", meaning eight, because it is equal to 1/1000^8.
Definition[edit | edit source]
A mole is defined as the amount of a chemical substance that contains exactly 6.02214076×10^23 (the Avogadro constant) representative particles (such as atoms, molecules, ions, electrons, or photons). Therefore, a yoctomole is equal to 6.02214076×10^-1 representative particles.
Usage[edit | edit source]
The yoctomole is rarely used in practical measurements due to its extremely small size. However, it can be useful in theoretical calculations and simulations, particularly in the fields of quantum mechanics and nanotechnology. For example, it can be used to express the number of atoms or molecules in a small number of nanoscale particles.
