Yosef Burg (January 31, 1909 – October 15, 1999) was an influential Israeli politician and a prominent leader of the National Religious Party. He served in various ministerial positions in the Israeli government over several decades.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Yosef Burg was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1909. He was raised in a religious Jewish family and pursued higher education in philosophy and Jewish studies at the University of Leipzig and the University of Berlin. He was also involved in the Zionist movement from a young age.
Immigration to Palestine[edit | edit source]
In 1939, with the rise of the Nazi regime, Burg immigrated to Mandatory Palestine. He quickly became active in the Hapoel HaMizrachi movement, which later merged into the National Religious Party.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Burg was first elected to the Knesset in 1949 as a member of the United Religious Front. He held his seat in the Knesset for nearly four decades, representing the National Religious Party.
Ministerial Positions[edit | edit source]
Burg held several key ministerial positions throughout his career:
- **Minister of Welfare** (1951-1952)
- **Minister of Health** (1951-1952)
- **Minister of Internal Affairs** (1961-1974)
- **Minister of Religious Affairs** (1977-1986)
As Minister of Internal Affairs, Burg was responsible for overseeing the internal security and administrative functions of the state. During his tenure as Minister of Religious Affairs, he worked on issues related to the Jewish religion and its integration into the Israeli state.

Yosef Burg was married to Rivka Slonim, and they had several children, including Avraham Burg, who also became a prominent Israeli politician. Yosef Burg passed away in Jerusalem in 1999.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Burg is remembered for his contributions to the Israeli political system and his efforts to bridge the gap between religious and secular communities in Israel. His long tenure in the Knesset and various ministerial roles made him a significant figure in the history of the State of Israel.
