Yuliya Yefimova (born April 3, 1992) is a Russian swimmer who specializes in the breaststroke. She is a multiple-time Olympic medalist and a world champion in her discipline.

Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Yuliya Yefimova was born in Grozny, Chechen Republic, Russia. She began swimming at a young age and quickly showed promise in the breaststroke events. Yefimova moved to Taganrog to train under the guidance of her coach, Irina Vyatchanina.

International Career[edit | edit source]

Yefimova made her international debut at the 2007 World Aquatics Championships in Melbourne, Australia. She won her first major international medal at the 2008 European Aquatics Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands, where she claimed gold in the 200m breaststroke.

Olympic Games[edit | edit source]

Yefimova has competed in multiple Olympic Games. She won her first Olympic medal, a bronze, in the 200m breaststroke at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she won silver medals in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

World Championships[edit | edit source]

Yefimova has been highly successful at the FINA World Aquatics Championships. She won her first world title in the 50m breaststroke at the 2009 championships in Rome. She has since accumulated multiple gold medals in both the 50m and 200m breaststroke events.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Yefimova's career has been marred by doping allegations. In 2013, she tested positive for a banned substance and served a 16-month suspension. She faced another controversy in 2016 when she tested positive for meldonium, but was later cleared to compete in the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Yefimova has lived and trained in the United States for several years, working with coach David Salo at the University of Southern California.
