2-HO-NMT
2-HO-NMT (also known as 2-Hydroxy-N-Methyltryptamine) is a lesser-known psychedelic compound. It is a hydroxylated analog of N-Methyltryptamine (NMT), a naturally occurring tryptamine found in various plants and animals.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
2-HO-NMT is a tryptamine, which is a group of organic compounds that serve as derivatives of the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptamines share a core structure comprised of a bicyclic indole heterocycle attached at R3 to an amino group via an ethyl side chain. 2-HO-NMT is substituted at R2 of its indole heterocycle with a hydroxy (HO) functional group CH2OH. It also contains a methyl group CH3 attached to the terminal amine RN of its tryptamine backbone (NMT).
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
The pharmacological properties of 2-HO-NMT are not well-studied. However, as a tryptamine, it is believed to act primarily as a serotonin receptor agonist. Serotonin receptors are a group of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and ligand-gated ion channels (LGICs) found in the central and peripheral nervous systems. They mediate both excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission. The most prominent serotonin receptor in psychedelic drug action is the 5-HT2A receptor.
Effects[edit | edit source]
The subjective effects of 2-HO-NMT are not well-documented due to its rarity and the lack of scientific research. However, anecdotal reports suggest that it may produce effects similar to other psychedelic tryptamines, such as psilocin and DMT. These effects can include open and closed-eye visuals, time distortion, enhanced introspection, and ego loss.
Toxicity and harm potential[edit | edit source]
The toxicity and long-term health effects of recreational 2-HO-NMT use do not seem to have been studied in any scientific context and the exact toxic dosage is unknown. As with all substances, the adverse effects vary greatly depending on the individual, dosage, method of administration, and personal health.
Legal status[edit | edit source]
The legal status of 2-HO-NMT varies by country. In some countries, it is a controlled substance, while in others it is legal to possess for personal use.
