20α-Dihydrotrengestone

20α-Dihydrotrengestone (also known as 20α-DHT) is a progestin medication which is used in gynecology and obstetrics. It is a synthetic steroid and a derivative of progesterone.

Chemistry[edit | edit source]

20α-Dihydrotrengestone, also known as 17α,21-dimethyl-19-norpregna-4,9-diene-3,20-dione, is a synthetic pregnane steroid and a derivative of progesterone. It is more specifically a derivative of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone and is a member of the trengestone and retroprogesterone group of progestins.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

As a progestin, 20α-Dihydrotrengestone has progestogenic effects. It binds to and activates the progesterone receptor, which mediates its effects. The medication has strong progestogenic activity, and also has some antiandrogen and antigonadotropic effects.

Medical uses[edit | edit source]

20α-Dihydrotrengestone is used in gynecology and obstetrics for a variety of indications. These include the treatment of menstrual disorders, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids, as well as in hormone replacement therapy and for contraception.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Side effects of 20α-Dihydrotrengestone may include nausea, headache, breast tenderness, and mood changes. It can also cause changes in menstrual bleeding, such as amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods) or menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding).
