Anthony Cerami is an American biochemist and entrepreneur known for his pioneering work in the field of medicine and biotechnology. He has made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of various diseases, particularly in the areas of diabetes and inflammation.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Anthony Cerami was born in Newark, New Jersey. He completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia University and went on to earn his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Rockefeller University.

Cerami began his career as a researcher at Rockefeller University, where he focused on the biochemical mechanisms underlying disease processes. His early work led to the discovery of the role of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) in the complications of diabetes.

Discovery of TNF[edit | edit source]

One of Cerami's most notable achievements is the discovery of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a cytokine involved in systemic inflammation and a key player in the immune system. This discovery has had a profound impact on the development of biologic drugs for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease.

In addition to his academic work, Cerami has been involved in several entrepreneurial ventures. He founded Inflammation Research Institute and co-founded Tarrytown Research, both of which focus on developing new treatments for inflammatory diseases.
