CD207, also known as Langerin, is a protein that is encoded by the CD207 gene in humans. It is a type II transmembrane protein that is primarily expressed in Langerhans cells, which are specialized dendritic cells found in the skin and mucosa. CD207 plays a crucial role in the immune system, particularly in the process of antigen capture and presentation.

Structure[edit | edit source]

CD207 is a C-type lectin receptor, which means it has a carbohydrate recognition domain that allows it to bind to specific sugar molecules. This binding is calcium-dependent. The protein is composed of several domains, including a carbohydrate recognition domain, a neck region, and a transmembrane domain that anchors it to the cell membrane.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of CD207 is to capture and internalize antigens through its carbohydrate recognition domain. Once internalized, these antigens are processed and presented to T cells, which is a critical step in the initiation of an immune response. CD207 is also involved in the formation of Birbeck granules, which are unique organelles found in Langerhans cells. These granules are thought to be involved in the processing of antigens.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

CD207 is used as a marker to identify Langerhans cells in tissue samples. Abnormalities in CD207 expression or function can be associated with certain diseases, such as Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a rare disorder characterized by the proliferation of Langerhans cells.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research on CD207 continues to explore its role in the immune system and its potential implications in various diseases. Understanding how CD207 functions can provide insights into the development of new therapeutic strategies for immune-related conditions.
