Cannabis dependence
Cannabis Dependence is a condition characterized by the compulsive use of cannabis, despite negative consequences. It is a form of substance use disorder, specifically a type of drug dependence.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Cannabis dependence is defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a pattern of cannabis use leading to significant impairment or distress, as manifested by at least two of eleven possible symptoms, occurring within a 12-month period. These symptoms include a strong desire to use cannabis, unsuccessful attempts to control use, and continued use despite harmful consequences.
Causes[edit | edit source]
The causes of cannabis dependence are complex and multifactorial, involving a combination of genetic, environmental, and individual factors. Genetic predisposition to substance use disorders, early initiation of cannabis use, and frequent use are all associated with an increased risk of developing cannabis dependence.
Effects[edit | edit source]
The effects of cannabis dependence can be severe and wide-ranging, impacting physical health, mental health, and social functioning. Physical effects can include respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive impairment. Mental health effects can include anxiety, depression, and psychosis. Social effects can include problems with relationships, employment, and the law.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for cannabis dependence typically involves a combination of psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, and medication. Psychotherapy can help individuals understand the reasons for their cannabis use and develop healthier coping strategies. Behavioral therapy can help individuals change their behavior and reduce their use of cannabis. Medication can help manage withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings.
