Centre for Arab Genomic Studies
Centre for Arab Genomic Studies
The Centre for Arab Genomic Studies (CAGS) is a research institution dedicated to the study of genomics and genetic disorders prevalent in the Arab world. Established in 2003, CAGS aims to advance the understanding of genetic diseases in Arab populations through research, education, and collaboration.
History[edit | edit source]
CAGS was founded in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, under the patronage of the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences. The center was established to address the high prevalence of genetic disorders in the Arab region and to promote genomic research that could lead to better diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these conditions.
Objectives[edit | edit source]
The primary objectives of CAGS include:
- Conducting research on the genetic basis of diseases common in Arab populations.
- Establishing a comprehensive database of genetic disorders in the Arab world.
- Promoting collaboration among researchers, healthcare professionals, and institutions within and outside the Arab region.
- Providing education and training in the field of genomics and genetic counseling.
- Raising awareness about genetic disorders and the importance of genetic research.
Research and Projects[edit | edit source]
CAGS is involved in various research projects aimed at understanding the genetic underpinnings of diseases such as thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. One of the center's significant initiatives is the establishment of the Catalogue for Transmission Genetics in Arabs (CTGA) database, which compiles information on genetic disorders reported in Arab populations.
Collaborations[edit | edit source]
CAGS collaborates with numerous local and international institutions, including universities, research centers, and healthcare organizations. These collaborations facilitate the exchange of knowledge, resources, and expertise, enhancing the overall impact of genomic research in the Arab world.
Education and Training[edit | edit source]
CAGS offers various educational programs and training workshops for healthcare professionals, researchers, and students. These programs cover topics such as genetic counseling, molecular genetics, and bioinformatics, aiming to build capacity in the field of genomics within the Arab region.
Publications[edit | edit source]
The center regularly publishes research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presents at international conferences. These publications contribute to the global body of knowledge on genetic disorders and their impact on Arab populations.
