Cream bun
Cream bun is a type of sweet bun that is filled with cream. The bun is typically made from yeast dough and is baked until golden brown. Once cooled, the bun is sliced open and filled with a generous amount of cream. The cream used can vary, but it is often a sweetened whipped cream or custard cream. Some variations of the cream bun may also include jam or fruit preserves as an additional filling.
History[edit | edit source]
The cream bun has origins in many different cultures. In the United Kingdom, cream buns have been a popular treat since the 18th century. They are often associated with Scotland, where they are known as "cream doughnuts" or "Scottish cream buns". In Asia, cream buns are a common feature in bakeries, with variations such as the Hong Kong-style cream bun, which includes a coconut topping.
Variations[edit | edit source]
There are many variations of the cream bun around the world. In Sweden, the cream bun is known as a "semla" and is traditionally eaten on Shrove Tuesday. The Swedish version includes almond paste along with the cream filling. In Japan, the "cream pan" is a popular bakery item, featuring a bread roll filled with custard cream.
In New Zealand, the cream bun is often served with a dollop of strawberry jam, and is known as a "cream doughnut". In Finland, a similar treat is known as "laskiaispulla", and is traditionally eaten during the Laskiainen festival.
