After completing his PhD, Abel moved to the United States to further his training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at the Harvard Medical School. Abel later joined the University of Utah as a professor and the Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes. During his tenure, he established a robust research program and contributed to the understanding of the role of mitochondria in diabetic cardiomyopathy.

In 2013, Abel was appointed as the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Under his leadership, the department saw significant growth in research funding and academic productivity.
