The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is a popular attraction located in Tomorrowland at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. This ride is based on the 2003 Disney-Pixar film Finding Nemo and utilizes the original submarine ride system from the classic Submarine Voyage attraction that operated from 1959 to 1998.
History[edit | edit source]
The original Submarine Voyage was one of the first major attractions at Disneyland, opening on June 14, 1959. It was inspired by the United States Navy's nuclear submarines and the 1954 Disney film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The ride closed in 1998, and the lagoon sat dormant for several years.
In 2005, Disney announced that the submarine ride would be reimagined with a Finding Nemo theme. The new attraction opened on June 11, 2007, bringing new life to the classic ride system with modern technology and storytelling.
Ride Experience[edit | edit source]
Guests board one of the eight submarines, each named after a real submarine from the original attraction. The submarines are:
- Nautilus
- Seafarer
- Explorer
- Sea Star
- Voyager
- Mariner
- Neptune
- Argonaut
The ride begins with a descent into the lagoon, where guests are "submerged" into the world of Finding Nemo. The journey takes them through various scenes featuring characters from the film, such as Nemo, Marlin, Dory, and Bruce the Shark.
The attraction uses a combination of animatronics, digital projection, and special effects to create an immersive underwater experience. The storyline follows Marlin and Dory as they search for Nemo, encountering various sea creatures and environments along the way.
Technology[edit | edit source]
The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage employs advanced technology to bring the underwater world to life. The ride uses:
- Digital Projection: High-definition projectors display animated scenes on screens submerged in the water, creating the illusion of depth and movement.
- Animatronics: Mechanical figures of sea creatures and characters enhance the realism of the experience.
- Audio Effects: Surround sound and character voices are used to immerse guests in the story.
Reception[edit | edit source]
The attraction has been well-received for its innovative use of technology and faithful adaptation of the Finding Nemo film. It is praised for its ability to entertain both children and adults, offering a nostalgic nod to the original Submarine Voyage while introducing new generations to the magic of Disney storytelling.
