Fluperolone acetate
Fluperolone acetate is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid and a corticosteroid ester. It is used in the treatment of various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.
Chemistry[edit | edit source]
Fluperolone acetate is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid. It is a derivative of prednisolone, with the hydroxyl group at the 9α position replaced by a fluorine atom and the hydrogen at the 6α position replaced by a methyl group. The acetate ester is attached at the 21 position.
Pharmacology[edit | edit source]
Fluperolone acetate works by mimicking the effects of cortisol, a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands. It binds to and activates the glucocorticoid receptor, leading to changes in gene expression that result in anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects.
Medical uses[edit | edit source]
Fluperolone acetate is used in the treatment of a variety of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and asthma. It can also be used to treat certain allergic reactions, skin conditions, and eye disorders.
Side effects[edit | edit source]
Like other corticosteroids, fluperolone acetate can cause a range of side effects. These can include weight gain, mood changes, insomnia, and osteoporosis. Long-term use can also lead to adrenal insufficiency and Cushing's syndrome.
