Genitourinary system stubs

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Genitourinary system refers to the organ system of the reproductive organs and the urinary system. These are grouped together because of their proximity to each other, their common embryological origin and the use of common pathways, like the male urethra. Also, because of their proximity, the systems are often studied together.

The Urinary system is the organ system that produces, stores, and eliminates urine. In humans it includes two kidneys, two ureters, the bladder, and the urethra. The female and male urinary system are very similar, differing only in the length of the urethra.

The Reproductive system is a system of sex organs within an organism which work together for the purpose of sexual reproduction. In humans, it includes the gonads (ovaries and testes), the sex hormones, the reproductive ducts (fallopian tubes, uterus, and vagina in females; epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate, and penis in males), and the accessory glands.

The Kidney is a bean-shaped structure with convex and concave borders. It lies in the retroperitoneum. Kidney function and anatomy can be studied through medical imaging techniques.

The Ureter is a tube that carries urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder. There are two ureters, one attached to each kidney.

The Urinary bladder is a hollow muscular organ in humans and some other animals that collects and stores urine from the kidneys before disposal by urination.

The Urethra is a tube that connects the urinary bladder to the urinary meatus for the removal of urine from the body.

The Gonad is the organ that makes gametes. The gonads in males are the testes and the gonads in females are the ovaries.

The Testes are the male gonads, the primary male reproductive organs. They produce sperm and androgens, primarily testosterone.

The Ovaries are the female gonads. They produce ova and the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone.

The Fallopian tube, or uterine tube, carries eggs from the ovaries to the uterus.

The Uterus is a major female hormone-responsive secondary sex organ of the reproductive system in humans and most other mammals.

The Vagina is a sex organ that is part of the female genital tract.

The Epididymis is a tube that connects a testicle to a vas deferens in the male reproductive system.

The Vas deferens is part of the male reproductive system of many vertebrates; these ducts transport sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory ducts in anticipation of ejaculation.

The Seminal vesicles are a pair of simple tubular glands posteroinferior to the urinary bladder of some male mammals.

The Prostate is a gland surrounding the neck of the bladder in male mammals and releasing prostatic fluid.

The Penis is a part of the male genital system that has a shaft and an apex called the glans penis.
