Harold Tafler Shapiro
Harold Tafler Shapiro (born June 8, 1935) is a Canadian-American economist and university administrator. He served as the president of both the University of Michigan and Princeton University.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Harold Shapiro was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He completed his undergraduate studies at McGill University, earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1956. He then pursued graduate studies at Princeton University, where he received his Ph.D. in economics in 1964.
Academic Career[edit | edit source]
Shapiro began his academic career at the University of Michigan in 1964 as an assistant professor of economics and public policy. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a full professor in 1970. His research focused on econometrics, the economics of higher education, and public policy.
University of Michigan Presidency[edit | edit source]
In 1980, Shapiro was appointed the 10th president of the University of Michigan. During his tenure, he emphasized the importance of research and academic excellence. He also worked to improve the university's financial stability and expand its endowment.
Princeton University Presidency[edit | edit source]
In 1988, Shapiro became the 18th president of Princeton University. His presidency was marked by significant growth in the university's endowment, the expansion of its campus, and the enhancement of its academic programs. He also focused on increasing diversity and inclusion within the university community.
Contributions to Public Policy[edit | edit source]
Shapiro has been actively involved in public policy, particularly in the areas of bioethics and higher education. He served as the chair of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission from 1996 to 2001, where he played a key role in shaping national policies on bioethical issues.
