Hordeolum

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Hordeolum is a common, painful inflammation of the eyelid that is usually caused by a bacterial infection of the oil glands. It can appear at the edge of the eyelid (external hordeolum, or stye) or deeper within the eyelid (internal hordeolum).

Causes[edit | edit source]

The most common cause of a hordeolum is Staphylococcus, a type of bacteria. These bacteria live on the skin surface and in the nose without causing harm, but they can cause an infection if they penetrate the skin's surface. Hordeola can also be caused by blockages of the oil glands in the eyelid.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The main symptoms of a hordeolum include a red, swollen, painful lump on the edge or inside of your eyelid and possibly, a watery eye. In some cases, the lump bursts and releases pus.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for a hordeolum includes warm compresses and over-the-counter pain medication. If the hordeolum is severe or doesn't improve with home treatment, a doctor may need to drain it or prescribe antibiotics.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

To prevent a hordeolum, it's important to maintain good eyelid hygiene. This includes not touching or rubbing your eyes with dirty hands, removing makeup before bed, and not using old or expired cosmetics.
