Human development (biology)

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Human development (biology) is the process of growth and maturation of the human body, from conception to adulthood. This process involves a series of stages, each with its own set of characteristics and developmental milestones.

Conception[edit | edit source]

Conception is the initial stage of human development, where a sperm fertilizes an egg to form a single cell, known as a zygote. This event marks the beginning of a new human life.

Embryonic development[edit | edit source]

Following conception, the zygote undergoes a series of cell divisions to form an embryo. This stage, known as embryonic development, lasts from the second week to the eighth week of pregnancy. During this time, the major organs and body systems begin to form.

Fetal development[edit | edit source]

After the eighth week of pregnancy, the developing human is referred to as a fetus. Fetal development continues until birth, with the fetus growing in size and complexity. This stage is characterized by the maturation of the organs and systems that were formed during embryonic development.

Birth and infancy[edit | edit source]

Birth marks the end of the prenatal period and the beginning of infancy. This stage lasts from birth to one year of age and is characterized by rapid growth and development. Infants learn to roll over, sit up, crawl, and eventually walk.

Childhood[edit | edit source]

Childhood is the period from one year of age until the onset of adolescence. During this time, children continue to grow and develop, learning new skills and gaining independence.

Adolescence[edit | edit source]

Adolescence is the period of transition from childhood to adulthood. It is characterized by rapid physical growth and development, as well as significant changes in behavior and cognitive abilities.

Adulthood[edit | edit source]

Adulthood is the final stage of human development. It begins at the end of adolescence and lasts until death. During this time, individuals continue to grow and change, but at a slower pace than in earlier stages of development.
