Inside Out is a 2015 American computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film was directed by Pete Docter, co-directed by Ronnie del Carmen, and produced by Jonas Rivera. The screenplay was written by Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve, and Josh Cooley, based on a story by Docter and del Carmen. The film features an ensemble voice cast including Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Richard Kind, Bill Hader, Lewis Black, and Mindy Kaling.

Plot[edit | edit source]

The story is set in the mind of a young girl named Riley Andersen, where five personified emotions—Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Sadness (voiced by Phyllis Smith), Fear (voiced by Bill Hader), Anger (voiced by Lewis Black), and Disgust (voiced by Mindy Kaling)—try to lead her through life as she and her parents adjust to their new surroundings after moving from Minnesota to San Francisco.

Production[edit | edit source]

The concept of the film was inspired by Docter's own experiences with his daughter, who he observed going through emotional changes as she grew older. The film's development began in 2009, and it was officially announced in 2011. The animation team consulted with psychologists and neuroscientists to accurately depict the mind's inner workings.

Release[edit | edit source]

Inside Out premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2015, and was released in the United States on June 19, 2015. The film was praised for its concept, screenplay, subject matter, and vocal performances, particularly those of Poehler and Smith.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $857.6 million worldwide against a budget of $175 million. It received numerous awards and nominations, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, and the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film.

Themes[edit | edit source]

Inside Out explores themes of emotional growth, the importance of all emotions, and the complexity of the human mind. It emphasizes that emotions like sadness are essential for personal development and emotional balance.
