Instruments used in urology are specialized tools designed for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of urological conditions. These instruments are essential in performing various urological procedures and surgeries.
Common Urological Instruments[edit]
Cystoscope[edit]
A cystoscope is a thin, tube-like instrument with a light and a lens for viewing. It is used to examine the inside of the bladder and urethra. Cystoscopy is a procedure that allows the doctor to view the lower urinary tract to diagnose, monitor, and treat conditions affecting the bladder and urethra.
Ureteroscope[edit]
A ureteroscope is a device used to examine the ureters and kidneys. It is similar to a cystoscope but is longer and thinner, allowing it to reach the ureters and kidneys. Ureteroscopy is often used to remove kidney stones or to diagnose other conditions affecting the upper urinary tract.
Resectoscope[edit]
A resectoscope is an instrument used to remove tissue from the prostate or bladder. It is commonly used in procedures such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Lithotripter[edit]
A lithotripter is a device used to break up kidney stones into smaller pieces that can be passed out of the body. The most common type of lithotripter uses extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) to fragment stones.
Catheters[edit]
Catheters are flexible tubes inserted into the bladder to drain urine. They are used in various situations, such as after surgery or when a patient is unable to urinate naturally. There are different types of catheters, including Foley catheters and intermittent catheters.
Nephroscope[edit]
A nephroscope is a type of endoscope used to examine the inside of the kidney. It is used in procedures such as percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) to remove large kidney stones.
