Intradermal spindle cell lipoma

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Intradermal spindle cell lipoma is a rare subtype of lipoma, a benign tumor that originates from adipose (fat) tissue. This particular variant is characterized by its location in the dermis layer of the skin and the presence of spindle-shaped cells.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Intradermal spindle cell lipomas are most commonly found in the head and neck region, particularly on the forehead. They are more prevalent in males and typically occur in middle-aged to elderly individuals. The tumors are usually solitary and small, often less than 1 cm in diameter. They are slow-growing and painless, and thus, they often go unnoticed until they reach a size that causes discomfort or cosmetic concern.

Histology[edit | edit source]

Histologically, intradermal spindle cell lipomas are composed of mature adipocytes (fat cells), spindle cells, and collagen bundles. The spindle cells are thought to be modified adipocytes. They have a characteristic "spindle" shape, hence the name. The collagen bundles are often thick and rope-like, which is a distinguishing feature of this subtype of lipoma.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of intradermal spindle cell lipoma is typically made based on the histological examination of the tumor. This involves taking a biopsy of the tumor and examining it under a microscope. Other diagnostic tools such as MRI or CT scan may be used to determine the size and location of the tumor.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

The primary treatment for intradermal spindle cell lipoma is surgical excision. This involves removing the tumor along with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence. In most cases, the prognosis after surgical removal is excellent, with a low rate of recurrence.
