John and Evelyn Billings were Australian physicians renowned for their work in the field of natural family planning. They developed the Billings Ovulation Method, a natural method of fertility awareness that helps women identify their fertile and infertile phases of the menstrual cycle.

John Billings was born on 5 March 1918 in Melbourne, Victoria. He studied medicine at the University of Melbourne, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1941. He later specialized in neurology.

Evelyn Billings[edit | edit source]

Evelyn Billings (née Thomas) was born on 8 February 1918 in Melbourne, Victoria. She also attended the University of Melbourne, where she earned her MBBS in 1943. Evelyn specialized in pediatrics.

Development of the Billings Ovulation Method[edit | edit source]

The Billings Ovulation Method was developed in the 1950s and 1960s. The method is based on the observation of cervical mucus to determine the fertile and infertile phases of a woman's menstrual cycle. The Billingses' research demonstrated that changes in cervical mucus are reliable indicators of ovulation.

The Billingses' work has had a significant impact on natural family planning and fertility awareness. Their method is used by millions of couples worldwide to achieve or avoid pregnancy.
